Wed, April 23, 4:20 to 5:50pm MDT (4:20 to 5:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2C

Abstract

Over the past 12 years, there has been a substantial increase in reported hate crimes across the country. As hate speech and bigotry proliferate, schools have become primary locations where harm toward marginalized groups occurs. Available data on hate speech, within school settings, reveals that Black students are disproportionately victimized by hateful actions. Research suggests that many educators are ill-equipped to identify and intervene when witnessing [non-Black] students engage in anti-Black behaviors. With Black students as the primary unit of analysis, this research highlights the prevalence of anti-Black hate speech in schools and provides insights into remedying and repairing the harm befallen Black students in k-12 settings.
