Unveiling Math Curricula: A Systematic Review (Poster 32)

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This systematic review centers on quantitative studies investigating math curriculum's impact on student outcomes. We employ a theoretical framework from Remillard and Heck (2014) to understand the various curriculum layers and supporting factors. We find consistency in the official curricula across the studies reviewed. For example, most were published commercial curricula and assessments aligned with the Common Core. However, our preliminary results show mixed findings regarding the effectiveness of math curricula. Analysis of the operational curricula suggests that teacher characteristics, such as teachers' mathematical knowledge and understanding of the curricula, play a key role in the operational curriculum. Our findings highlight the importance of professional development to student learning. These results are essential for policymakers and key stakeholders.
