This study examines the impact of preparatory programs and extracurricular activities on the GPA and medical school acceptance rates, particularly for applicants from Minority Serving Institutions. Using data from 328,468 applicants to U.S. MD-granting medical schools from 2017 to 2023, we analyze relationships between GPA, six unique participation experiences, and acceptance outcomes. Our findings indicate that extracurricular activities like volunteering and lab research correlate with higher GPAs and acceptance rates, while MCAT prep and post-baccalaureate programs are often linked to lower GPAs. Most participation experiences positively contributed to acceptance outcomes, but not uniformly. This study underscores the importance of a nuanced admissions approach, holistic development, and tailored support for MSI applicants to enhance their cultural capital.
