Profiles of Parents’ Values Toward Participation to School Governing Boards

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 709

Abstract

This study examined parents’ involvement on the governing board (GB) of their child’s school, focusing on its perceived values and costs. Because this form of involvement can be time- and energy-consuming, parents need to perceive more values than costs. Based on the expectancy-value-costs model, we aimed to identify parent values-costs profiles and their links with their current and future participation. We used data from a study where parents (N=3250) filled an online questionnaire. Results of latent profile analysis identified three profiles: Detached (12%), Optimists (35%), and Resistants (53%). Current and future participation was more likely for parents in the Optimists profile, who perceive moderate and high levels of value and few costs. Recommendations for intervention and policy will be discussed.
