Abstract

Education scholars have called for a reimagining of civic education (Mirra and Garcia, 2023; Lee et al., 2021), recognizing the importance of youth civic and political engagement and its role in democracy. In this paper, we examine the literacy practices of social movements through a comparative case study of the organizing of Latine/x immigrants in the U.S. and youth in Brazil. We argue that understanding activist literacies can contribute to expanding notions of civic education across borders (geographic, generational, citizenship status, etc.), toward education that is more global and transnationally-oriented. This expansion offers critical lessons for civic education that is grounded in social movements and the rich multimodal literacy practices within them, and that broadens notions of political engagement.
