Goal Profiles and Perceived Costs of International Asian and Asian American Students in Engineering (Poster 44)

Sat, April 26, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

This study examined goal orientation profiles among international and domestic Asian engineering students at a U.S. university. Latent profile analysis identified three profiles: 1) moderate-high with low performance, 2) moderate-high with average performance, and 3) high all. Students in the
"high all" profile reported the highest perceived costs and career intentions, with no GPA differences. In contrast, the profile with mastery orientation consistently had the lowest costs. International Asian students were more likely to be in profiles with higher performance-approach and -avoidance goals suggesting the possible influence of their cultural backgrounds. The findings highlight the importance of considering students' diverse cultural backgrounds in understanding motivational profiles.
