Dream of the Planet: Indigenous Knowledges for Just Education Renewal From Colonial Legacies

Sat, April 26, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 702

Abstract

American educational practices continue to embrace hidden curriculum (Jackson, 1968) practices which accept colonialism as a Big T Truth. The Toltecs refer to the acceptance of this particular Big T as an agreement to domestication within the Dream of the Planet (Ruiz, 1997) that perpetuates colonial and capitalist worldviews rooted in exploitation, hierarchies, and domination. This paper presents a unit plan designed to challenge colonial discourses through the decolonized practices rooted in the Four Agreements (Ruiz, 1997) of the Toltec naguals (masters), “Fresh Banana Leaves: Healing Indigenous Landscapes Through Indigenous Science” (Hernandez, 2022), and community action through local ecosystems as a collective Dream of the Planet praxis for remedy and repair from colonial/capitalist discourses in education and research.
