Abstract

This paper calls for equitable partnerships between universities and Tribal communities by analyzing a tribal-university relationship to highlight humanizing research collaboration. By grounding the study in decolonial and critical Indigenous research methodologies, it considers the collaborative partnership between a California Native American Tribe and a university Diversity Science Center. This analysis highlights research that honors tribal sovereignty and meaningful tribal-university partnerships. It utilizes a relational Indigenous research paradigm to illustrate how the California Tribe engages in the tribal-university relationship for cultural continuance that includes their sacred responsibility to steward the lands/waters and care for all more-than-human life. All researchers must work towards honoring, respecting, and upholding humanizing, accountable partnerships with Indigenous people when supporting their research goals.
