Gender Equity in STEM: New Insights on Critical Scholarship From the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering, and Technology

Fri, April 25, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

In collaboration with a non-academic research organization in South Korea, we describe recent
developments in the STEM disciplines in Korean higher education. Using Lord et al.’s (2019)
framework of ecosystem metrics, our exploratory project shows how the research findings of
non-academic research agencies can be leveraged by academic researchers to better understand
gender inequity and imagine new possibilities for support systems for women in STEM.
Specifically, this study is based on an in-person site visit to the Korea Foundation for Women in
Science, Engineering and Technology in May 2023. We identified the access points for Korean
women entering STEM education. To conclude, we discuss the broad implications of WISET’s
organizational expertise for advancing gender equity in STEM higher education.
