Settler Pedagogies: Mad Constructions of Collegiality

Thu, April 24, 3:35 to 5:05pm MDT (3:35 to 5:05pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

I am writing this paper for anyone who finds it hard to breathe at a settler university. Even if I didn’t have the words to articulate it, I have always felt the suffocating chokehold of american empire and white supremacy on a college campus, and I’m writing this paper to try to explain why that is so. In this paper, I specifically focus on collegiality as a form of atmospheric violence that is perpetuated by the settler institution. I rely on mad studies and anti-colonial theories to analyze discourse produced by the academic industrial complex on the importance of collegiality in academic environments. Through this analysis, I hope to show how empire requires a collegial atmosphere to ensure settler futures.
