From Careers to Classrooms: A Review of Prior Work Experience in Shaping International Doctoral Students

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 107

Abstract

This literature review examines international doctoral students’ transition from professional careers to doctoral programs in the United States. With an increase in post-pandemic enrollment, these students face challenges such as balancing academic and research responsibilities and overcoming language and social barriers. The study reviews 25 peer-reviewed articles published from 2000 to 2023. Utilizing Satir’s Change model, the review explores the stages of change and their impact on students’ academic and social integration. The findings reveal significant shifts in intellectual responsibilities and social identities, highlighting the importance of recognizing and supporting the unique trajectories of doctoral students with prior work experiences. The study suggests that academic institutions develop culturally responsive resources to empower these students in achieving academic and social success.
