Abstract

Learners' engagement in the learning process is a critical element in creating an effective learning environment. The study used a mixed design to explore the impact of classroom discipline strategies on EFL learners' engagement with 438 non-English undergraduate students. The results of the study indicated that: (1) All strategies were significantly correlated with learners' engagement and its various dimensions. (2) The discussion and involvement strategies were found to be more effective in enhancing learners' engagement than punishment and recognition strategies. (3) The hinting strategies were effective in improving affective engagement, while aggression strategies were effective in improving cognitive engagement. The study provided valuable insights into the role of discipline strategies in facilitating effective language learning.
