A DACA Initiative: Transformative Organizational Change at a School of Medicine

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3D

Abstract

This revelatory case study explores how the DACA Initiative (DI) transformed the School of Medicine (SOM) beyond changing student demographics. It examines whether the DI led to organizational changes at SOM that can be considered transformative for supporting DACA medical students and how SOM’s financial operations evolved to assist them. Key research questions include whether these organizational changes were truly transformative and what factors contribute to DACA students feeling welcomed. Data was collected through 2 focus groups and 28 interviews with DACA alumni, SOM leaders, and financial institutions that funded DACA medical students' education. The findings reveal SOM’s commitment to diversity, though inconsistencies in support suggest a need for greater transparency and continued efforts beyond recruitment to ensure lasting impact.
