Abstract

This study examined school principals' knowledge of the change process, experiences leading and managing change, and related professional development needs. Using a descriptive research design with quantitative and qualitative methods, data were collected through a survey of 77 principals in Alberta, Canada. Findings revealed gaps in principals' knowledge of change processes, challenges with leading change, and need for targeted professional development. Principals expressed concerns about resistance to change, lack of time and resources, and maintaining staff motivation. Successes were attributed to effective communication, building trust, and involving stakeholders. The study highlights the importance of providing principals with training on change management to enhance their leadership effectiveness. Implications for leadership preparation programs and ongoing professional development for school administrators are discussed.
