Abstract

Previous research has established the importance of whole number and fraction knowledge for developing more advanced mathematical skills, including algebra. This study specifically examines whether fraction arithmetic predicts generalized arithmetic above and beyond whole number arithmetic in 7-9th grade students. Given that the structure of whole number arithmetic does not always apply to fraction arithmetic (e.g., multiplication with whole numbers always result in larger number, whereas this is not the case with fractions), we hypothesized that fraction arithmetic would be a predictor for generalized arithmetic. Results showed that fraction arithmetic accuracy predicted generalized arithmetic accuracy, even after controlling for whole number arithmetic. The study highlights the importance of a solid foundation in fraction arithmetic for success in algebra.
