Abstract

Effective literacy instruction emphasizes how student agency may be a critical factor in supporting student learning environments. The purpose of this research is to explore what agency means to those who experience it firsthand- students. The following research is part of a larger research project focused on exploring student agency across multiple contexts. In this phase of the research, and presentation student agency is examined from across student participants in upper elementary and middle school grades (3rd through 6th) located in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States to understand what students’ perceptions of their agency are and what are practices students report critical in supporting their agency in schools.
