This study investigated the effects of Generative AI and translanguaging on second language writers’ engagement in information-based writing, by adopting a 2*2 quasi-experimental design. Employing a four-dimensional writing engagement framework (affective, behavioral, cognitive, and social), we found that AI had positive effects on the affective, cognitive, and social engagements, though not every aspect of these three dimensions. Translanguaging had negative effects on the behavioral dimension of writing engagement for the two GenAI groups. Based on our findings, we would like to argue that translanguaging necessitates training and call for translanguaging-inclusive GenAI platform design.
