Qualitative Case Study on Students’ Articulations and Actual Use of Adaptive Learning Systems in Singapore

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

The permeation of applications powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) has contributed to a growing interest in personalised learning approaches, which have become closely associated with adaptive learning systems (ALS). This presentation highlights an attempt to personalise learning using ALS, focusing on students’ perspectives and use of ALS. The reported research was conducted in Singapore, which has been integrating technology into education since the 1990s. This research adopted a case study approach and applied the activity theory as a framework guide analysis of audio-recorded student interviews. Preliminary findings suggest complexities surrounding students’ perspectives and use of the ALS, including competing priorities and no buy-in. These would have implications on designing use of ALS as part of students’ classroom or schooling experience.
