Abstract

We present the findings from a community-based participatory research project to explore if artificial intelligence (AI) can support the creation of culturally grounded educational materials working with Indigenous (Quechua) community members in Peru. Working closely with Quechua teachers, students, and elders, we gathered community knowledge in a culturally grounded way, and then used offline AI software—to protect community knowledge—to create lesson plans, activities, audio, and video. We then asked for feedback on materials created. Findings show that with strict guidelines, AI can support the creation of age-appropriate materials, but the researchers and community members had to create a full example lesson plan series prior to AI being able to support the work. We discuss implications.
