Abstract

Women’s formal labor force participation in South Asia is still low, driven by challenges such as a lack of acceptance in the workforce. This trend is also present in higher education; not only is hiring an issue, but gender differences also influence career progression, promotion, and workload balance. This study uses a mixed method design to explore the factors that influence female faculty and staff's hiring and career progression at a higher education institution in South Asia. Although our results indicate no gender bias in hiring, there is some indication of gender influencing career progression and promotions.
