Change and Stability in Adolescents’ Math and English Motivational Profiles: Integrating Achievement-Goal and Expectancy-Value Perspectives (Poster 22)

Fri, April 25, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

Combining situated expectancy-value and achievement-goal frameworks, we aimed to identify high school students’ motivational profiles in math and English, while examining the longitudinal trajectories of these profiles over one semester. Latent profile analyses across two measurement waves demonstrated similar motivational patterns in both subjects, identifying five profiles: average-all, demotivated, ambitious-high-cost, maladaptive, and adaptive. Latent transition analyses further revealed that in both domains, more than 70% of students remained their profile membership over time. Regarding general transition tendencies, students were more likely to shift from the demotivated, the ambitious-high-cost, and the adaptive profiles to the average-all profile in both subjects. Additionally, girls in the math field exhibited more negative motivational shifts, while their motivational transitions in English were primarily positive.
