Student Learning Engagement Investigations in the Asian Studies Course Settings: A Mixed Methods Approach

Thu, April 24, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Asian Studies courses are crucial for students to hone skills to be qualified citizens. Engaging students in these classrooms would help students benefit much from the cultural experiences. However, there is still limited literature. In this research, I conducted an exploratory mixed method to catch the nuances and involve a broader population. I used semi-structured interviews to collect experiences from 23 participants and then developed an instrument for my quantitative research phase using the results from the interviews. After analysis based on 99 participants of the instrument, I discussed the different influences of the independent variables on students’ engagement and learning experiences. I also discussed ways of merging data from qualitative and quantitative research phases, and the findings and implications.
