Understanding Science Teachers' Support Needs: Assessing the Reliability of a Support-Seeking Instrument

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3B

Abstract

This study evaluates the reliability of a support-seeking instrument for science teachers, addressing urgent mentorship needs amidst challenges like COVID-19 and educational inequalities. Focusing on elementary and middle school teachers, the research in a diverse urban district involved 115 participants in a professional development program. A 20-item Likert-scale survey showed strong internal consistency with a Cronbach’s α of 0.838. The instrument effectively captures support-seeking behaviors, which is essential for targeted mentorship programs. This validation aids in addressing educational disparities, enhancing teacher retention, well-being, and professional growth, aligning with AERA's mission to improve educational outcomes and equity.
