Addressing Student Disengagement With Students as Lead Researchers: Youth Participatory Action Research Across San Diego County Schools

Thu, April 24, 5:25 to 6:55pm MDT (5:25 to 6:55pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

California Department of Education (2022) data show that San Diego County districts experienced chronic absenteeism (15 days or more) among nearly 70,000 K12 students. If large groups of low-income and minoritized students continue to disengage in school, these students’ performance will decline, and race, income, and gender achievement gaps will grow (Dyer, 2015). Reengaging youth in schooling is vital to remedying low student achievement rates. Chronic Absenteeism YPAR situates student voices as central to identifying previously unrecognized issues impacting student experiences in schools transforming schools into a didactic educational experience. By engaging student co-researchers (SCRs), the LISTEN lab seeks to understand how youth voice can assist in broadening the participation of low-income, Black, Latinx students, and women in schools.
