Enhancing Multimodal Composition Through Engagement With Generative AI in a Multicultural Context: The IDEA Framework

Abstract

This study explores how multicultural students in Hong Kong utilize Gen-AI tools for
digital multimodal composition, assessing impacts on motivation, writing processes, and
outcomes. Using the IDEA Framework (Interpret, Design, Evaluate, Articulate), researchers
integrated Gen-AI into their creative processes. Analysis of AI tool usage and classroom
interactions, along with surveys and interviews, revealed benefits across Content Generation,
Feedback and Revision, Multilingual Support, Critical Thinking, and Visual Representation.
Students showed improved vocabulary, grammar, and structure in compositions, emphasizing
the synergy of human-AI collaboration in education for enhanced engagement and creativity.
