What Stories Were Told: Comparison of Female Narratives in China and Republic of Korea Morality Textbooks

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3E

Abstract

Female narratives in textbooks impact students' gender identity, especially their perceptions of females. The narrative approach adopted in the compilation of China's latest twelve elementary morality textbooks and the Republic of Korea's four elementary morality textbooks makes the ideology of gender, especially the ideology of females implicit in the narrating and depicting contents and forms of textbooks. Therefore, by adopting the coding and analysis methods of grounded theory, this study looked into the main themes of female stories narrated in morality textbooks of China and the Republic of Korea, sought to uncover any inherited ideologies, and found gender-biased and stereotypical contents in textbooks for further instruction in morality classes.
