Abstract

Identifying high-quality teachers is essential for addressing teacher shortages and the lack of qualified teachers, particularly in developing countries including Indonesia. In this study, a person-centered approach was used to analyze data from 582 Indonesian preservice teachers based on their utility values and career choices in teaching. The findings revealed four distinct profiles: motivated, average, pragmatic, and disengaged teachers. These profiles were influenced by prior learning experiences, social factors, and personality traits. Moreover, significant differences were observed among the profiles concerning emotional exhaustion and academic performance, with motivated teachers achieving the best results and disengaged teachers exhibiting the poorest outcomes. The results emphasize the importance of considering preservice teachers’ values and career decisions when investigating their academic success and well-being.
