Abstract

This study, co-designed with an Australian Down syndrome organisation, examines how parents/carers of children with Down syndrome choose secondary schools after successful mainstream primary education. Through interviews and focus groups, the research identified key factors influencing school choice, including school type, community links, social inclusion, and inclusive practices. Participants highlighted the conflicting advice they received, and the advocacy required to secure the best educational fit for their child. The study offers four recommendations: (1) Enhance inclusive education and social inclusion, (2) Remove barriers to school choice, (3) Normalise assistive technology use, and (4) Strengthen home-school partnerships. Despite its small scale, the findings suggest these issues are widespread and need addressing for a more inclusive education system.
