Abstract

Participation in postsecondary education in Canada has been increasing over the past two decades; however, Black students are underrepresented. This review explores the causes of Black students’ underrepresentation in Canadian universities along with highlighting areas of promise. We frame the review through the sociological work of Pierre Bourdieu. The major areas discussed which impact Black students’ access to postsecondary education are academic, cultural, social, and economic capital.
