Both/And: The Joint Influence of Educators’ Diversity Ideologies and Perceptions of Educational Infrastructure on Equity-Focused Practice Implementation

Sun, April 27, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

Why do some educators implement equity-focused practices while others do not? This mixed methods study examined the relationships between diversity ideologies (i.e., beliefs about social difference and hierarchy; Plaut, 2002), educational infrastructure (i.e., formal and social organizational routines, processes, and roles related to teaching and learning; Peurach et al., 2019), and practice implementation. Results indicate that diversity ideologies predict both educators' perceptions of educational infrastructure and their practice implementation. These findings suggest that educational infrastructure can be leveraged strategically to support educators with differing diversity ideologies in implementing equity-focused practices.
