Somewhere Between Ambition and Altruism: Why Faculty Agree to Serve as Interim Administrators

Fri, April 25, 3:20 to 4:50pm MDT (3:20 to 4:50pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3F

Abstract

Higher education institutions depend on interim administrators to bridge critical gaps in leadership. Nevertheless, interims may encounter challenges to their leadership, as others question whether they have the authority to make long-term decisions. Furthermore, faculty colleagues may criticize interims for “going to the dark side.” Based on interviews with 25 interim academic administrators, this study seeks to understand what motivates and sustains interims as they carry out this complex role. Understanding the motivations of interim administrators could help institutions better support their success and development as academic leaders.
