This study investigates differences in civic education effectiveness across different school types, particularly among schools of choice (i.e., private and charter schools), utilizing 2014 and 2018 NAEP-Civics Grade 8 data. We explore the variability in civic scores, the impact of student demographics, and the role of civic curriculum exposure on civic achievement. Results indicate private school students outperform charter and traditional public school students, with older charter schools showing better performance. Hierarchical linear modeling reveals significant effects of race, ELL status, and socioeconomic factors on civic outcomes. Findings underscore the need for targeted interventions to address disparities and enhance civic education, contributing to informed, engaged citizenship.
