Black Families’ and Youth’s Counter-stories around Digital and STEM Literacies Past and Present (Poster 5)

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 3A

Abstract

Using counter-stories as a research methodology, this chapter examines intergenerational narratives within Black families around issues relating to digital and STEM literacies at home and at school. These counter-stories reveal how Black parents purposefully and intentionally prepare their children to compete globally for access to digital and STEM opportunities. They strive to create resilience in their children as they encounter a society that is often reluctant to recognize the strengths and brilliance of Black youth.
