Race, Gender, and Masculinity: A Chicana/Feminista Pláticas Approach to Co-Constructing Knowledge, Healing, and Reciprocity

Fri, April 25, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 708

Abstract

This qualitative research study engages men of Color (MOC) undergraduate students in a collaborative inquiry that illuminates their lived experiences at a Hispanic-Serving Institution through a culturally relevant method, Chicana/Feminista pláticas. During pláticas the participants and I co-construct knowledge, heal, and engage in reciprocity through open and unstructured conversations and storytelling. MOC in higher education share common experiences of wearing an oppressive mask of silence that conceals their emotions and vulnerability in one context, but may be open to expressing themselves authentically without the mask in another context. This study examines the sense-making of how men of color engage with the university as gendered and racialized beings.
