Grandma’s Hands: Reimagining Educational Futures Through Black Archival Practice and the Stories That Bind Us

Sun, April 27, 8:00 to 9:30am MDT (8:00 to 9:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Bluebird Ballroom Room 2F

Abstract

In today’s climate where educational histories are under threat, expanding our understanding of diverse historical perspectives is vital. Drawing on the principles of Sankofa, we propose a framework that investigates the histories of Black women teachers (BWT) across the diaspora. This framework will help us grasp their global complexities, pedagogical practice and center historical contexts, that can inform future teaching practices and teacher education. Our research questions focus on how to build such a framework and integrate historical contexts and theories into education. By employing Africana feminist historical consciousness (AFHC), we aim to decenter whiteness and enhance teacher education strategies to better meet the needs for Black women pursuing teaching as a profession.
