Abstract

This convergent mixed-methods case study examines the effectiveness of Grow Your Own (GYO) summer internships in addressing teacher shortages and promoting educational equity in high-need communities. Findings from 19 participants reveal significant gains in pedagogical skills, confidence, and retention, with notable strengths in problem-solving, communication, and leadership. The program's immersive, supportive design fosters community, clarifies roles, and provides valuable resources and feedback. Participants demonstrate improved self-awareness, recognizing areas for growth and expressing a desire for ongoing development. This study highlights the potential of GYO internships to drive systemic change, support educator professional development, and cultivate a diverse, capable teaching workforce that understands and teaches local cultures, ultimately contributing to educational renewal and justice.
