The good cops, bad cops, bullets, and wounds: Culturally Sustaining Prison Abolition Literacies

Wed, April 23, 12:40 to 2:10pm MDT (12:40 to 2:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 403

Abstract

Black children are dual victims of the prison industrial complex. They are subjected to incarceration in and beyond their own early childhood education, and to the impact incarceration has on their communities. In this presentation, we explain the utility of culturally sustaining prison abolition literacies––a literacy practice that acknowledges the pervasive injustices of the carceral state and action-oriented ways to protect Black and other minoritized children in early childhood teaching and curriculum.
