Carnivalesque Writing of Chinese High School Students: A Three-Year Class Diary Study

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 1

Abstract

This study analyzes the three-year class diaries of Chinese high school students based on Bakhtin's carnivalesque theory, in order to reveal the phenomenon of carnivalesque writing in high-pressure educational environments. The results show that the widespread use of humor and satire, the carnivalesque spirit in collective activities, questioning of authority, and the diversity of language and culture are all important ways for students to express themselves and explore the world in high-pressure environments. In future educational reforms, we should value the insights offered by this youth culture to help students better cope with academic pressure and societal challenges.
