Abstract

This study conducted a latent profile analysis of student-major fit in order to examine the developmental change in student-major fit, the demographics of profiles and the relationship between profiles and academic achievement. 903 students participated in the study and the main results are described as follows: (1) Four distinct student-major fit profiles were identified: low, medium, acceptable and high; (2) Student-major fit profiles fostered major satisfaction, learning engagement and academic achievement; (3) Major satisfaction and learning engagement fully mediated the impact of low and acceptable fit profiles on academic achievement, but partially mediated for the high fit profile. These findings highlight the importance of student-major fit in shaping educational policies and fostering student success.
