Exploring the Role of Student Authority Relations in Science Group Collaboration (Poster 17)

Fri, April 25, 9:50 to 11:20am MDT (9:50 to 11:20am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Exhibit Hall Level, Exhibit Hall F - Poster Session

Abstract

While many studies have shown some interaction patterns of different groups, few studies have focused on the important role of authority in student collaboration. This study presents different interaction clips of two groups completing the same task in a Chinese first-grade science classroom. We found that the group with clear division of labor did not complete the task, while the seemingly disordered group successfully completed. We analyzed students' interaction from the perspective of authority. It shows that the overly centralized authority relation prevents the team from clarifying its overall understanding of the task and advancing collaboration. It is necessary for teachers and researchers to pay attention to the authority of students in collaboration.
