Strengthening the Pipeline: Faculty Training and Its Impact on Black and Latinx Community College Students in STEM (Poster 21)

Abstract

This study examined the effects of faculty training on Black and Latinx community college students aspiring to enter STEM-heavy fields within psychology. Using a pre-post design, students completed surveys at the beginning and end of the semester to assess changes in academic beliefs, motivation, perceptions of cultural and racial equity, and belonging. Results indicated that while students’ high academic self-efficacy remained stable, significant improvements were observed in their perceptions of being treated equally by faculty and experiencing less stereotyping. However, there was a decline in perceptions of cultural responsiveness in the curriculum. These findings highlight the importance of faculty training in promoting an inclusive academic environment, while also pointing to the need for greater integration of cultural diversity in coursework.
