The Untold Stories of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) Students in Pursuit of the CPA

Sat, April 26, 1:30 to 3:00pm MDT (1:30 to 3:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Only 1% of Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) are Black, and most are graduates from Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Although there is extant research of the dearth of Black CPAs, few studies have examined the factors that play a role in HBCU students sitting for the CPA exam. This qualitative study sought to understand participants’ intent to sit for the exam and to identify barriers they may encounter while preparing for the exam. Findings suggest that financial resources, faculty support, and a robust accounting curriculum were influential factors for participants.
