“Throw Dat Hat!”: Educational Experiences, Attainment, and Aspirations of Adolescent Female Trafficking Survivors in a Residential Facility

Thu, April 24, 1:45 to 3:15pm MDT (1:45 to 3:15pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 706

Abstract

This study explores the educational experiences of adolescent human trafficking survivors, focusing on their past, present, and future educational goals. Using data from a larger case study, which included intake surveys and interviews with eleven residents, the research aims to improve educational practices in U.S. residential care centers. Findings reveal the residents' past risk factors, current educational achievements, and future aspirations, with many aiming for high school equivalency and valuing monetary success. Unlike studies that measure success solely by survival or sobriety, these residents have broader dreams, including healthy families and material possessions. The study highlights the need for social workers, educators, and researchers to focus on educational attainment and aspirations in developing residential programs for trafficking survivors.
