Unpacking the Secrets of Tenure and Promotion: Identity, Process, and Community

Wed, April 23, 9:00 to 10:30am MDT (9:00 to 10:30am MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Four Seasons Ballroom 2-3

Abstract

Schlossberg (2008) describes transitions as a process of moving in, moving through, and moving out. In this collaborative self-study, two early career scholars investigate and explore their experiences, feelings, and evolving identities during the tenure and promotion process at a regional university. Through engaging in reflective conversations, they unpacked issues arising from three key themes – understanding scholarly identity, understanding tenure and promotion process, and understanding community of practice. Their experiences of the tenure and promotion process validated their identification as being of members of the academy and that they had transition into the moving through phase of Schlossberg’s theory.
