Abstract

Literacy preservice teacher (PST) preparation balances increasingly polarized sociopolitical and sociocultural tensions. This integrative review offers a current synthesis of the literature for dismantling hegemonic literacy PST preparation to discover what the field knows about preparing literacy teachers in culturally multidimensional (CMLT) ways. This review of 1,520 articles established 113 articles fitting for inclusion as they described CMLT literacy practices for PSTs from 2007-2023. Findings indicate a shift from a dominant focus of CMLT as solely multicultural text selection to a more nuanced understanding of how humanistic approaches can be employed within PST preparation as an agent of change. Notably, the studies draw forward writing and activism as burgeoning tools for PST training and equitable approaches to literacy education.
