Ethical and Affirming Research with Young Trans and Nonbinary Participants: A Case Study Analysis

Wed, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm MDT (2:30 to 4:00pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 712

Abstract

Objectives or purposes:

This presentation is a case study of the successful IRB process of a researcher’s dissertation study whose main participants will be K-12 transgender and nonbinary (TNB) students and recent graduates from Wisconsin. I will analyze the state (Wisconsin) context, researcher’s professional and personal positionality, research project design and objectives, and WoPC justification through the lens, critique, and combination of various ethical practice documents and articles to ultimately form an updated affirmative, ethical best practices for TNB young people.

Perspective(s) or theoretical framework:

My study will combine and critique ethical good/best practices for trans-related research (Adams et al., 2017; ITHF, 2019; Vincent, 2018), research with children (Lundy et al., 2007), and research with transgender, non-binary, two-spirit, and other gender non-conforming (GNC) youth (Reed, 2023). I believe that all people including minors should not only be able to share their voices, stories, and ideas as a part of research, especially when that research is delving into disrupting a norm of which the minor is a part, but also have their ideas be acted upon in a meaningful and/or substantive way. This is especially important when the research environment will likely provide affirmation, joy, and community for that minor, in a part of their life that has otherwise marginalized, shamed, or caused them harm.

Methods, techniques, or modes of inquiry:

I will deductively and inductively analyze my own research project for relevant themes by combining and critiquing previous research on ethical considerations for research with trans people, children, and gender diverse youth. I will add to the current research by identifying research designs and methods that might proactively affirm and celebrate young TNB children rather than not causing them harm.

Data sources, evidence, objects, or materials:

My data will include a detailed account of my IRB application and communications with the IRB from 2024.

Results and/or substantiated conclusions or warrants for arguments/point of view:
I provide considerations for creating an ethical study that not only considers basic safety and harm minimization, but also lays the groundwork for providing an affirmative and celebratory environment/space for TNB young people.

Scientific or scholarly significance of the study or work:

TNB young people who are not yet out to their families deserve to have their voices heard and acted on through research. Researchers who work with TNB young people should consider not only designing studies that are ethical and minimize harm, but also designing studies that affirm, honor, and celebrate the young TNB peoples’ expertise as well as take action based on their ideas and experience.
