Recent teacher preparation efforts have shifted away from standalone experiences to infuse technology across a teacher education program. In alignment with infused approaches, competency-based education is a viable option for preparing preservice teachers to effectively integrate technology and teach across face-to-face, blended, and online settings. Using a design-based research approach, this study examines the design elements of a competency-based educational technology program to offer guidance on effectively preparing preservice teachers to integrate educational technology. Initial results suggest that an infused competency approach is a viable method for effectively preparing preservice teachers to use educational technology and teach across face-to-face, blended, and online environments, while offering direction for improving competency-based approaches for preservice teacher education.
