Abstract

This paper aimed to (a) present an overview of how learning analytics (LAK) has been applied in Community of Inquiry (CoI) research and (b) explore how both CoI and LAK can inform each other. We included 51 studies in the review through database and electronic search. We observed that LAK studies collected various data sources (e.g., text data, log data, CoI survey) and used two major approaches to analyzing data (i.e., conventional and computational methods). LAK methodologies have been integrated into CoI research to varying degrees. Some studies used the CoI framework only descriptively without explaining how it informed research design and process. Some studies also provided new insights into the CoI framework. Implications and recommendations are provided.
