Abstract

This paper presents the implementation of a Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) curriculum at a high school in Cleveland, Ohio. Two co-authors, who are English teachers, share their experiences and plans for the curriculum's development. Based on data collected during the 2023-2024 year, including field notes, teacher interviews, and student interviews, the study provides insights into the YPAR implementation process. We hope to create a structured YPAR pathway through high school: building students' confidence and storytelling skills in ninth grade, conducting formal research projects in tenth and eleventh grades and implementing action plans in twelfth grade. The paper argues the importance of breaking down YPAR elements to better support students in creating meaningful change within their schools.
