Applied Ethics as Reflection, Interrogation, and Design: Insights From Instructional Design Cases

Sun, April 27, 11:40am to 1:10pm MDT (11:40am to 1:10pm MDT), The Colorado Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 108

Abstract

Design cases are a method that helps design professions, such as IDT, build design knowledge (Boling, 2010; Howard et al., 2012). By analyzing themes of reflection, interrogation, and design across design cases, we can deepen our knowledge around the ways designers identify ethical considerations, devise solutions, and engage various strategies for problem solving. Subthemes for reflection include agency, ethical perspectives or commitments, and iterative questioning and refinement of a design based on reflective practices. Interrogation appears to encompass several strategies such as critical analysis, critical design, speculative design, Wrong Theory Protocol (WTP), and futurism. Subthemes for design include stakeholder involvement, participatory design, problem framing, iterative revisions, and the generation of creative or novel solutions.
